Your first grade student will review their writing skills in order to:

  • Write all uppercase letters of the alphabet
  • Write all lowercase letters of the alphabet
  • Form and write words using all lowercase or uppercase letters

Your first grade student will understand the characteristics of ideas, brainstorm and sequence ideas, and organize with graphic organizers; plan a beginning, middle, and ending; proofread, revise and edit for punctuation, spelling, and details; and write the final copy and illustrate the following types of writing samples:

  • Setting of a story
  • Alternate ending to a story
  • Main character
  • Short story with rhyming words
  • Opinion
  • Friendly letter
  • Message
  • Fantasy
  • Letter of persuasion
  • Character sketch
  • Nonfiction topic summary
  • Directions
  • Rhyming poem
  • Poem using figurative language

Your first grade student will write and illustrate sentences about the following:

  • How something makes them feel
  • Number words and colors
  • Cause / effect situations
  • Words that show position
  • Telling sentences
  • Exclamations
  • Questions using who, what, where, when, and why
  • Onomatopoeia
  • Alliteration
  • Antonyms
  • Homophones
  • Adjectives
  • Contractions with not (don’t, doesn’t, isn’t, can’t)
  • All 7 days of the week for a “Days of My Week” book
  • Favorite/least favorite month of the year
  • Similarities/differences (comparison paragraph)

Your first grade student will develop a variety of methods to analyze and discuss a story in order to:

  • Write a response or opinion about a story
  • Answer questions about a story by using part of the question in the answer
  • Develop questions after reading a story
  • Create a Venn diagram to compare/contrast
  • Create a story map to help sequence the story
  • Write an extension to a story
