Your second grade student will understand the relationship between numbers, quantities, and money in order to:

  • Identify the values of a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half-dollar
  • Skip count to find the value of a set of coins
  • Recognize place values of numbers (ones, tens, and hundreds) and identify groups of each quantity
  • Read, write, order, compare, estimate, and use numbers through 50
  • Order and use whole and ordinal numbers through 100
  • Count, compare, and make change using pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and one dollar bills
  • Use the fewest amount of coins possible to show an amount of money

Your second grade student will describe the attributes and parts of two- and three-dimensional shapes by:

  • Identifying, classifying, and describing plane shapes
  • Identifying, classifying, and comparing solid shapes
  • Identifying faces, edges, and vertices of solid shapes
  • Identifying quadrilaterals (parallelograms, rhombus, trapezoids)
  • Identifying congruent shapes
  • Identifying and classifying angles
  • Using models to demonstrate the sliding, flipping, and turning of shapes
  • Identifying and creating shapes which display symmetry

Your second grade student will use standard and non-standard units of measurement by:

  • Telling time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, five minute, and one minute intervals on an analog and a digital clock
  • Understanding and estimating lengths of time and elapsed time
  • Exploring common instruments for measuring (scales, rulers, cups) and identifying the unit measure of each instrument
  • Using cups, pints, quarts, gallons, and liters to estimate and measure capacity
  • Estimating and measuring length using non-standard units
  • Using pounds, ounces, kilograms, and grams to estimate and measure weight
  • Reading and understanding information on a calendar
  • Solving problems involving length, perimeter, and area using pictures and models
  • Estimating and measuring the length and weight of common objects to the nearest unit
  • Choosing the best tool and unit to measure length, weight, capacity, and temperature
  • Reading Fahrenheit and Celsius thermometers
  • Sorting and ordering objects according to measurable attributes

Your second grade student will understand the structure and meaning of addition and subtraction problems, and will develop strategies for estimating and solving them by:

  • Explaining the relationship between addition and subtraction as inverse operations
  • Explaining and performing addition and subtraction of one-digit whole numbers in vertical and horizontal form
  • Reviewing addition and subtraction of two two-digit numbers without regrouping
  • Adding a one-digit number to a two-digit number with or without regrouping
  • Adding two-digit numbers with or without regrouping
  • Using the partial sums algorithm for adding two-digit numbers
  • Adding three two-digit numbers
  • Adding three-digit numbers with or without regrouping
  • Subtracting a one-digit number from a two-digit number with or without regrouping
  • Subtracting two-digit numbers with or without regrouping
  • Using the trade first method for subtracting two- and three-digit numbers
  • Deciding which operation (addition or subtraction) to use to solve a problem
  • Using various estimating techniques and rounding of whole numbers to solve problems
  • Using place values to represent whole numbers through 100 using numerals, words, and physical models
  • Counting, reading, and writing numbers through 1,000
  • Counting by thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Showing numbers in different forms (words, models, expanded form, standard form)
  • Skip counting by twos, threes, fours, fives, and tens from any number
  • Relating equal groups, repeated addition, and skip counting to multiplication
  • Identifying and writing fact families
  • Solving a variety of non-routine, multi-step problems involving addition and subtraction
