Your second grade student will reflect on the ideals, principles, and practices of citizenship in a democratic republic by:

  • Identifying, describing, and displaying attributes of good citizenship
  • Defining his role as a member of a group
  • Reading and defining new vocabulary words
  • Recognizing how to work with others in a group to solve problems and to accomplish common goals

Your second grade student will analyze culture and cultural diversity by:

  • Reading and defining new vocabulary words
  • Describing things that communities have in common with one another, and what makes a community unique
  • Describing cultural customs of specific holiday celebrations
  • Realizing how people from various cultures make contributions to communities

Your second grade student will interpret the way human beings view themselves in and over time by:

  • Describing how communities change to meet the needs of their members
  • Comparing and contrasting how the various models of communication and transportation have been developed
  • Generating a calendar and timeline of events
  • Learning about explorers and the discovery of the world
  • Learning about the first Americans and colonies
  • Learning about major American historical events
  • Learning about how communities change over time
  • Reading and defining new vocabulary words

Your second grade student will assess materials to study space and place by:

  • Designing and constructing a map with a key
  • Using globes and maps as sources of information
  • Describing how weather and seasonal patterns affect land and living things
  • Locating various cities, states, countries, and continents on a map
  • Using geographical terms to describe landforms, bodies of water, weather, and climate
  • Using social studies skills and various sources of information to learn more about the world around him

Your second grade student will recognize individual development and identity by:

  • Recognizing that people vary in abilities and talents
  • Demonstrating appropriate behavior in a variety of settings

Your second grade student will relate individuals, groups, and institutions to one another by:

  • Explaining an individual’s responsibility toward his own family and community
  • Listing ways in which people depend on human resources and institutions

Your second grade student will examine the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services by:

Your second grade student will analyze how people create and change structures of power, authority, and governance by:

  • Understanding various entities of local government, including city, town, and state officials, local government taxes, and local services
